Kayak Fishing in NC's Backwaters

Kayak fishing is quickly catching on as an inexpensive way for inshore fishermen to get out on the water. It has become very popular in Florida where there are vast inshore waters to be explored. Even very large fish, such as Tarpon and Permit are taken in kayaks.

I have been kayak fishing for about a year now. Its a great way to get out on the water when you cant or dont want to use the boat. Kayaks open up areas that most boats cant get into. You can literally float in soft mud. A kayak is also quiet. I have paddled right over the top of Flounder without them even knowing I was there. Its truly the ultimate inshore craft.

The kayak opens up many options to those who dont own boats. They are not good for open water, but are great for backwater creeks and flats. You can fish for any inshore species form these craft. Whether you are live-baiting, light-tackle, or fly-fishing, there is a kayak for everyone. The kayak also lends itself very well to wade fishing. You can paddle to where you want to wade fish, giving you many more options than just the ones you can walk to.

The best kayaks for fishing, in my opinion, are large, stable sit-to-top kayaks such as the ones made my Wilderness Systems or Ocean Kayak. The sit-on-top design allows for a lot of movement and a wide range of motion, perfect for casting. They also provide plenty of accessible storage for all your tackle. The sit-on-top allows you to dismount easily to wade fish, release a large fish, or scout a flat. A wide, stable boat allows you to stand up and cast or pole. A two-seater is ideal. You can have one person in the back controlling the boat and one in the front fishing.

Kayak Fishing is quickly catching on as a viable way to fish inshore. I encourage everyone to try it out. Its great and you even get some exercise in the process!
